On September 21, 2010 an industry working group focused on comprehensive protection systems against product piracy will convene at the Institute for Materials Handling, Materials Flow and Logistics of the Technical University Munich. Schreiner ProSecure has been a member of the ProAuthent alliance for three years – together with leading industrial corporations and three departments of TU Munich. The research project is centered on developing suitable identification and authentication technologies and an IT-based system for product tracking and tracing. The aim is to prevent pirated goods from infiltrating into the supply chain and counterfeit components being knowingly or unknowingly taken into operation.

About two thirds of all machinery and equipment manufacturers are affected by product piracy. A new video by the VDMA entitled “Stand up against product piracy - High Tech against technology theft” informs about possibilities to effectively protect products—from single components all the way to complete machines.

To effectively counter the growing threat posed by counterfeit drugs, pharmaceutical manufacturers increasingly bank on anti-counterfeiting and brand protection solutions for pharmaceuticals. At the same time, at the initiative of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations (efpia) EU legislation will create the basis for a Europe-wide standardized track & trace system for pharmaceuticals.

Schreiner ProSecure will showcase innovative solutions for efficient counterfeiting and tampering protection of spare parts for plant and machinery at the Hannover Fair from April 19 to 23, 2010.

In hall 17, booth D23, the specialist for security solutions will team up with partners from industry and research to present initial results of the “ProAuthent” project: Integrated Product Piracy Protection through Marking and Authentication of Critical Components in Plant and Machinery Engineering.”

At the beginning of 2010, customs authorities in Ingolstadt, Germany, confiscated more than 800 faked solar modules. An importer was planning to sell the panels from China as products made by a renowed manufacturer. The counterfeit goods have an estimated value of 270,000 euros.

For manufacturers of branded solar products which are in high demand counterfeit-proof product marking is becoming increasingly important. Schreiner Group offers a wide range of marking and functional labels which have been tested for use with solar modules and provide definite proof of authenticity throughout the product’s lifecycle.

The LogSeal sample label by Schreiner ProSecure is an example of effective product and brand protection. The use of overt and covert security features represents a major hurdle for counterfeiters. Distributors/dealers, customs officials and consumers can check a 15-digit code that is stored in a Data Matrix code on the label on the internet and thus ensure that the product is an original. After the query the 15-digit code will be blocked for any further queries because it is issued only once.

In addition, detachable label parts for documentation purposes may be integrated into the seal. These documentation labels can be transferred to delivery notes, for example. The documentation labels bear the same code and security features as the seal that is firmly attached to the product. This enables authentication of the panels also from the office at any time.

In close collaboration with Hypercom, the world’s leading provider of card readers, Schreiner ProSecure has developed a seal for readers in doctors’ offices that doesn’t give data thieves the slightest chance. Any attempt to open the reader or tamper with the seal will be reliably indicated. The seal has been tested and awarded a particularly high security rating by the German Federal Agency for Security in Information Technology (BSI).

The European Commission today adopted a Communication on enhancing the enforcement of intellectual property rights in the internal market. Complementing legislation, the actions in this Communication aim to:

• Support enforcement through a new EU Observatory on counterfeiting and piracy;

PIN Safe provides tamper-proof sealing for PINs. Up to now, there is no known optical, chemical or physical method available to spy out the PIN without the attempt being noticed.
In collaboration with Otto Künnecke Mail Processing Systems and the DSV Group, a turnkey system solution was developed that is used across Germany for mutual savings banks.

To prevent attacks against critical data, the specialists Schreiner ProSecure and Schreiner VarioLight print extremely thin conductor paths on a film. Like a protective wrap, this security film can then be affixed around micro-chips or storage media.

An attempt to tamper with equipment that is protected by the wrap activates the protective mechanism: In case of short circuits or interruptions, for instance, all security-relevant data is immediately erased.

According to the Nano.de-Report 2009 "Status Quo der Nanotechnologie in Deutschland" (“Status Quo of Nano Technology in Germany) by the Federal Ministry of Research and Development, document security and product protection are viewed as focal areas for use of nano technologies. They include, for example, fluorescent materials or the use of DNA for authentication.

Schreiner ProSecure was an exhibitor at the International Security Printers’ Conference & Suppliers Exhibition in Stockholm and demonstrated its industry expertise.  

From May 13 to 15, 2009, Schreiner ProSecure showcased self-adhesive solutions for document and asset protection such as toll fee stickers (vignettes) for windshields and seals. The ePayment label for electronic payment systems was one of the focal products attracting visitors’ interest.

The labels are applied to commonly used items like cell/mobile phones. To pay, the customer simply positions the device with the label close to the POS/checkout terminal. The payment transaction is performed in a contactless and anonymous process by wireless data transmission, without signatures or use of PINs. The amount of the purchase is debited directly from the value stored on the chip of the label. An acoustic and visual signal confirms completion of the payment transaction.
